Studies of housing in Canada show a chronic insufficiency of home supply.
Canadian youth and young adults who live alone are even more likely to struggle with housing.
Statistics Canada reports that vulnerable populations can remain on social and affordable housing waitlists for two years or more. In 2021, household shelter cost increases in Ontario were some of the highest in the country (+7.6%).
Windsor-Essex has a drastic lack of affordable housing.
As of January 2023, 566 households in Windsor-Essex were known to be experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness. Thousands of units are needed to address the current housing crisis in our area.
The Bridge is building an additional 38 housing units on our current property.
The buildings will be single and double story in nature, featuring accessibility and energy efficient designs. Each unit is 560 square feet and offers a well-laid out kitchen/dining room space, bedroom and bathroom. The development will have both market-rate and affordable rental housing options.
The new rental homes are located close to many local amenities including Seacliff Park, grocery stores, pharmacies, and potential employment providers.
The organization has secured funding at various levels, including:
While the above funding is greatly appreciated, unfortunately it is not enough.
“It’s so critically important for donors to help us build more of these places. The plight of our youth right now with addiction and mental health issues and homelessness to say the least … we so need this – our community needs this, and they need it now. So by donating and helping build these homes for people that they can afford, you’re not only helping transform their lives but you’re actually saving their lives.”
